Good afternoon, SOAR Superstars!
Today I spoke with Andy Onusconich, our contact with the Virginia Area Director's Office. He advised me that Virginia Disability Determination has closed. This means that, until they reopen, there will not be any decisions on new or existing claims. Right now there is not a time frame for when DDS will re-open. SSA is still open and analysts are working remotely. During this transition, we will need to utilize the following methods to process applications:
1. New/reconsideration application - workers should still attempt to create a My SSA Account. If they are not able to, they should complete the paper application. They should submit the entire application and cover sheet via mail to their local office. I recommend utilizing USPS return receipt on all new and reconsideration applications submitted via mail.
2. Reinstatement applications - Forensic Discharge Planners/PSH Case Managers - for individuals who need benefits reinstatement, you will need to be in contact with your local office directly. Right now you should fax the discharge summary or release papers and a letter to your Local Office, requesting benefit reinstatement. You should include a letter with the discharge/release date, client's current address, your contact information, a 1696 (if it is not on file), and your request for expedited reinstatement.
Please remember that the changes to SSA and DDS will result in delays in application processing. This is a tough time for everyone, so prime your clients to expect delays. I will continue to update information, as it is available. Please reach out to me at georgi.fisher@dbhds.virginia.gov with any questions or concerns.

The Protected Filing Date will remain the same as it has been and back pay will still be dependent upon that date.
Any idea if people who end up getting approved later on will receive back pay for the months DDS was closed?
